Hotshot car hauler: how hotshot car hauling works

By Gustavo · Updated October 2026

Car hauling is one of the most popular ways into hotshot work. The trailers are simple, the freight is everywhere, and dealers, auctions and owners move cars every day. It's also crowded and rate-sensitive, so the owners who do well are the ones who fill every spot and plan the next pickup before the last drop.

Wedge trailers tilt the top deck to fit more cars in less length. A dovetail and long ramps help with low cars. A winch handles non-running vehicles. See hot shot car hauling trailers, the 3-car hauler trailer non-CDL guide, and best truck for hotshot for the truck side.

Non-CDL car hauling business

Non-CDL car hauling works, but the math is tight. A typical sedan weighs 3,000 to 3,500 lb and an SUV or pickup much more. Add a trailer of 6,000 to 8,000 lb and a truck of 8,000 lb or more and you're close to 26,000 lb with two or three cars. Every load needs the actual vehicle weights, not a guess. Use the hotshot GCWR and non-CDL weight checker before you accept.

Who ships cars by hotshot

  • Dealers moving inventory between stores and from auctions
  • Auctions releasing sold vehicles to buyers
  • Rental and fleet companies repositioning cars
  • Private owners moving, buying online or shipping classics
  • Repair shops and salvage yards moving damaged vehicles

Dealers and auctions give repeat volume. Private owners often pay more per car but take more time to schedule. A mix of both keeps the trailer fuller: dealer and auction cars for the base of the load, private customers to fill the last spot on a lane you're already running. Salvage and non-running vehicles pay extra for the winch time and the risk, and some carriers specialize in them. More on freight types in hot shot freight.

How car hauling pays

Car hauling is priced per car. The trip's income is the sum of every car on the trailer, so the two biggest levers are how many spots are full and how far you drive empty to the first pickup. Long open spots on a return trip are where profit disappears.

Running a hotshot car hauler well

  • Inspect every vehicle at pickup and delivery, with photos of every panel, noted on the bill of lading.
  • Check cargo coverage limits per vehicle, especially for high-value cars.
  • Carry the right gear: wheel straps, chains for some vehicles, a winch, ramps and a jump pack.
  • Confirm running condition. Non-running vehicles take more time and should pay more.
  • Plan routes and meeting points for private customers who can't take a trailer on their street.

Starting a hotshot car hauling business

Most car haulers start with a dually and a used wedge trailer. Before you buy, decide whether you'll run non-CDL, which limits you to light two- and three-car loads, or get a Class A and run three or four cars. Then line up the paperwork: USDOT, MC authority, insurance with cargo limits that fit the vehicles you'll carry, and a carrier packet for the brokers and marketplaces you'll use. Our how to start a car hauling business guide covers every step.

Seasons in vehicle transport

Demand for car hauling moves through the year. Spring and summer bring more private moves and dealer inventory changes. Snowbird season moves cars south in the fall and north in the spring. Auction volume follows the used car market. Rental companies reposition fleets before holidays and busy travel seasons. Knowing these patterns helps you choose lanes that keep the trailer full both ways.

Damage and disputes

Most disputes in car hauling come from damage claims with no proof of condition. A clear inspection at pickup, signed by the customer or the auction, with dated photos, protects you. Note every scratch and dent, check the fuel level and mileage, and take the same photos at delivery.

Car hauling vs other hotshot freight

Car hauling has more competition and more paperwork per load than general flatbed hotshot work, but steadier demand. Some owners switch between the two with a flatbed trailer that can carry cars, which gives more options on slow weeks. See our hotshot guide for the broader picture.

Dispatch for hotshot car haulers

We dispatch wedge and flatbed car haulers, CDL and non-CDL. With hotshot dispatch and our car hauler desk, we find vehicles that fill your spots, confirm weights for non-CDL rigs and counter every rate. You approve every load, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you.

Questions people ask

Q01What is hotshot car hauling?

Moving vehicles on a pickup or medium-duty truck with a car trailer, usually two to four cars at a time, instead of on a 9- or 10-car semi carrier.

Q02Can you car haul without a CDL?

Yes, if the truck and trailer ratings add to 26,000 lb or less and the actual loaded weight stays under that too. That usually limits you to two cars, sometimes three light ones. Check every load's weight.

Q03How many cars can a hotshot car hauler carry?

Two on a smaller wedge or flatbed, three on a common 40 to 45 ft wedge, and four on longer wedges with a CDL rig. Vehicle size decides as much as trailer length.

Q04Is hotshot car hauling profitable?

It can be when every spot is full and the empty miles are short. An empty spot costs a full car's pay. Run each trip through a car hauler profit calculator before you accept.

Q05Where do hotshot car haulers find loads?

Vehicle transport marketplaces, general load boards under auto transport, brokers that specialize in vehicles, dealers and auctions directly, and dispatchers.
