Trucking guides
By Gustavo · Updated October 2026
These guides are for owner-operators and small fleet owners who want straight answers before they spend money or sign anything. How to start, where loads come from, what a truck and trailer can legally carry, when a CDL applies, what insurance costs and how the money works once the wheels turn.
Gustavo writes and updates each one. Rules are checked against the federal source and dated, numbers that are examples are labeled EXAMPLE, and anything that depends on your state or your plates says so. If a guide gets a fact wrong, the editorial policy explains how to tell us and how fast it gets fixed.

Tools and terms
Most guides end with a number to work out. The free trucking calculators handle cost per mile, rate per mile, payload, GCWR and CDL checks, fuel and IFTA, with the formula shown under each result so you can check the math yourself. When a guide uses a term you have not met before, the trucking dictionary gives the short version.
Reading about loads is one thing; booking them every week is another. If you would rather drive while someone else works the phones, our dispatchers find and negotiate the loads, you approve each one, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you to sign.
