Hotshot load boards: how to use them well
By Gustavo · Updated October 2026
Load boards are where most hotshot owners find their first loads. They're fast and open all day, but they're crowded, and the best-paying freight often never gets posted. Used well, a board is one tool among several. Used badly, it's hours of scrolling and first offers taken to avoid sitting.
How a load board works for a hotshot
A broker posts a load: pickup and delivery points, dates, equipment, length, weight and sometimes a rate. You search by lane and equipment, call or message the broker, agree on a rate, and the broker sends a rate confirmation. You haul, deliver, send the paperwork and get paid on the broker's terms.
For a hotshot, the equipment filter is the first problem. Few posts say "hotshot." Most hotshot freight is listed as flatbed, partial or LTL, so you search those and then check whether the load fits your deck and weight.
Filters that matter
| Setup | Equipment | Max length | Max weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-CDL, 26,000 lb combined, 30 ft deck | Flatbed, partial | 28 ft | 7,000 lb |
| CDL, 40 ft gooseneck | Flatbed, partial, hotshot | 38 ft | 16,000 lb |
| 3-car wedge | Car hauler, auto | 3 vehicles | By rating |
Leave a little room under your real limits, since posted sizes and weights are often rounded. Use the max payload calculator to find your number.
Paid vs free load boards
Paid boards usually have more posts, broker credit scores and days-to-pay data, rate history for lanes, and better search tools. Free boards and free tiers have fewer posts and less data, but they're worth a look, especially for regional freight.
What to compare before paying:
- Number of flatbed and partial posts on your lanes, not nationwide totals
- Broker credit and payment data
- Rate data for your lanes
- A phone app that works well on the road
- Contract terms: monthly vs yearly
Prices and plans change often, so check each board's current offer. For the phone side, see hotshot loads app.
Reading a hotshot post
- Weight. Missing or a range? Call and ask before anything else.
- Length and dimensions. Will it fit with room to secure it?
- Loading. Forklift at both ends, or do you need ramps?
- Rate. Posted or "call"? Check it against your break-even with the hotshot rate calculator.
- Broker. Credit, days to pay and reviews.
- Age of the post. Old posts are often covered or underpriced.
Why boards aren't enough
Many brokers post their hard-to-cover loads and keep easy ones for carriers they already know. Rates on boards are often the opening number, not the final one. And every hotshot in the area sees the same post at the same time.
Owners who do well usually combine:
- A board for volume and market rates
- A short list of brokers who call them first
- A few direct shippers who need regular runs
- Reload planning, so the next load is found before the current one delivers
Our hot shot loads guide covers every source, and non-CDL hot shot loads covers the light-rig side.
Hotshot car hauling on load boards
Car hauler posts show up under auto transport or car hauler categories, and there are marketplaces built only for vehicles. Rates are per car, so filling every spot matters more than the rate on any one vehicle. The car hauler load profit calculator shows why.
Getting set up on a board
Open your account with your MC and DOT numbers, upload your insurance certificate and W-9, and set your equipment profile honestly. Save searches for your home lanes and the lanes you like to run, with alerts on. Brokers often book the first carrier who calls with clear answers, so have your rate, your truck details and your available time ready before you dial.
Time on the board
Track your hours for a week: searching, calling, waiting for callbacks, negotiating, setting up with new brokers. Many owners find it's 10 to 20 hours. That's the real cost of the board, on top of the subscription.
Dispatch instead of the board
A dispatcher works the boards and the phones for you. With hotshot dispatch, we filter every post by your ratings, call brokers about loads that aren't posted, counter the rate and plan the reload. You approve every load, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you.
Questions people ask
Q01What is the best load board for hotshot?
The one with the most posts on your lanes for your weight and deck. Most hotshots use one of the large paid boards for volume and add a free or low-cost board for extra posts. Try two for a month and keep the one that books more of your loads.
Q02Are there free hotshot load boards?
Yes. Some boards offer free tiers or free trials, and some apps are free with ads or limited features. Free boards usually have fewer posts and less broker credit data. Check current plans on each board's site.
Q03Can I find hotshot car hauling loads on load boards?
Yes, under car hauler or auto transport categories, and on boards made for vehicle transport. Many car hauling loads move through dedicated auto transport marketplaces rather than general freight boards.
Q04Do load boards show the real weight?
Not always. Posts often show an estimate, a range or nothing. For a non-CDL rig, always get the actual weight from the broker before you agree.
Q05Do I need my own MC to use a load board?
To book loads for hire, yes. Brokers check your MC, insurance and safety record before they tender a load. Some boards let you search without authority, but you can't book.
